Everything surrounding us and within us is made up of energy—energy that affects how with think, see, feel, and react, energy that guides our lives. Even our thoughts form energy. This week on the “Emotions Mentor” podcast, I spoke with my friend and reiki master Sharon Ho about the energy we create, how it affects us physically and mentally, and how we can use natural methods to change the energy around us and improve our lives.
The takeaway from our conversation? Energy doesn’t lie. Positive energy leads to positive feelings—and positive health. Negative energy leads to negative feelings—and ill health.
Licensed psychotherapist, Danielle Daniel, who joined Sharon and I on the podcast, explained that “the thoughts we process are actually electro-chemical events taking place in the nerve cells.” When we tap in to these “events”—this energy—we have the opportunity to promote health and wellness.
There are a number of natural and holistic ways—energy work, I like to call it—to connect with the energy around us and change it in ways that are beneficial to our well-being.
Here are brief explanations of several methods I’ve found to be particularly helpful:
1. Reiki (pronounced ray-key), like my friend Sharon specializes in, uses physical touch to rid the body of blockages and promote the flow of positive energy. This Japanese technique encourages healing on a spiritual level. You can learn more about it here.
2.Tapping, also known as EFT (emotional freedom technique), combines elements of acupuncture and modern therapy to connect with specific meridian points on the body while talking through and processing emotions or traumatic experiences. The method has been shown to relieve stress, anxiety, depression, and other negative energy.
Nick Ortner, author of The Tapping Solution: A Revolutionary System for Stress-Free Living, explains that “The basic technique requires you to focus on the negative emotion at hand: a fear or anxiety, a bad memory, an unresolved problem, or anything that’s bothering you. While maintaining your mental focus on this issue, use your fingertips to tap 5-7 times each on 12 of the body’s meridian points. . . . Tapping on these meridian points—while concentrating on accepting and resolving the negative emotion—will access your body’s energy, restoring it to a balanced state.”
3. Reflexology takes advantage of the idea that different points on the feet and hands correspond to different areas of the body. A licensed reflexologist will apply pressure to these points on the feet and hands to promote healing throughout the body. If combined with talk therapy and essential oils, reflexology can be both incredibly relaxing and emotionally freeing
4. Essential oils can be used on their own or in connection with any of the above methods to channel positive energy and wipe out the negative. Because essential oils are made of hundreds of natural chemical compounds that interact with the chemicals in our minds and bodies, they are able to communicate with the endocrine and nervous systems to rewrite the body’s chemistry. They have the power to change cellular activity, to cleanse toxins from the body, and to protect the mind and body from emotionally harmful events.
Dr. Daniel reminded me in our podcast this week that simply inhaling certain essential oils can instantly trigger chemical reactions in the body that reduce stress and calm anxiety. Diffusing oils while doing other types of energy work can have powerful results.
Inherent to any kind of energy work is understanding that you have the power to change the energy around you. The effort you make—whether it be through positive thought, tapping therapy, or aromatherapy—can actively change the way you feel.
Essential Oil Tips
When you start doing energy work, consider incorporating these three essential oil routines into your daily efforts:
Morning Call to Action.
Apply melaleuca to the soles of your feet in the morning, inhaling the aroma as you take this deliberate action. Melaleuca provides energy protection, as well as cleansing and purifying benefits. Consider pairing the melaleuca with peppermint or lemon essential oil and repeating this affirmation while applying the oils: “I am in charge of how I feel. I will not compare myself with others today. I will choose to be positive. I will not sweat the small stuff. I will feed my spirit and my mind. I will build a wall of positive energy to surround me.”
Midday Positivity Boost.
Throughout the day, especially during particularly stressful times (perhaps just before an important meeting or during that hour before dinner time when everyone arrives home at once with the weight of their own stressors influencing the family), diffuse this incredible positivity blend that combines the soothing benefits of cardamom with the energizing elements of citrus—3 drops cardamom, 5 drops grapefruit, 5 drops lemon.
Bedtime Winding-Down Ritual.
Diffuse lavender as you prepare for bed. While the oil diffuses, picture each of your worries being cast off or washed away as you perform your bedtime rituals: removing clothing, putting on fresh and clean pajamas, washing your face, brushing your teeth, and so on. Once you are in bed, breathe in the soothing aroma of the lavender and visualize your body fading away, leaving only your soul—or your light—behind. As you doze off, think about how it feels to be light and free of stress and negative energy. To switch things up, consider alternating between lavender on its own some nights and a blend of 7 drops lavender, 6 drops vetiver, 5 drops cedarwood, and 2 drops wild orange on other nights.
